Elana sat in the driver’s seat of her Emeya and contemplated the darkening sky. She should go home—do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollars—but she knew that if she went home in this much mental turmoil, she wouldn’t sleep a wink.

Taking a walk sounded like a great idea, but Cathy had also just finished recommending that Elana not go out alone after dark if she knew what was good for her.

Elana bit her lip. She didn’t know which quiet corners of Haven would be safest. Wandering the fields of Senkyem with the clandestine, subterranean guardians’ complex beneath her feet? Perhaps the residential streets of Thani or Zevenda would be better, or even Premier’s high-class avenues, dotted with security cameras lest someone steal their precious goods?

In the end, Elana started the car and drove away into the twilight, headed for the most private place she knew—her mother’s mausoleum.

It took her twenty minutes to get there, plus a couple more to find the entrance Matt had shown her. When she finally located the gate in the hedgerows, she parked the Emeya outside. The list of people allowed in this cemetery was miniscule. The arbiters, the consort in charge of groundskeeping, a rotating staff that performed the keeping of said grounds, and any direct relatives of those who rested in the tombs.

If Elana would be safe on an evening walk anywhere in Haven, it would be here, and she sincerely hoped she wasn’t jinxing herself by thinking it.

She locked the Emeya behind her, stuck her hands in the pockets of her warm wool sweater, and set off along the statue-lined path. Orange light glowed within the topiaries and from the statues, guiding and following her as she walked.

Did she have a responsibility to people like Jack Rhuland? What about what Jerry had told her the night they’d gone for dinner, when she’d offered him partnership in the company? He’d urged her to help when and where she could rather than withholding the precious information and skills that vampires seemed to hoard.

Elana imagined throwing in the towel. Imagined giving up on the whole thing, closing the case for good, and pretending House Veridian wasn’t up to anything. Valeria could do what she wanted, but Elana was out—all she wanted was to live her life without someone trying to kill her every three days.

She was tackled from behind and sent flying off the glowing path with her attacker’s arms around her midriff, rendering her last thought extremely ironic.

Elana squirmed in her assailant’s grip, attempting to lever herself into a more advantageous position than facedown in the grass with someone on her back who was way stronger than Webber.

They let go of her with one hand, but before Elana could take the opportunity to move, something stabbed deep into her shoulder and burned.

She screamed. Her vision blurred with the sudden, agonizing pain. For a split second, everything went blue like it had in the training room, and Elana was abruptly aware that her attacker was no longer attached to her.
